![]() An open fracture is when a bone breaks in such a way that bone fragments stick out through the skin or a wound penetrates down to the broken bone. Proximal tibia fractures can be closed - meaning the skin is intact - or open. This damage to the surface of the bone may result in improper limb alignment, and over time may contribute to arthritis, instability, and loss of motion. The impact often causes the cancellous bone to compress and remain sunken, as if it were a piece of Styrofoam that has been stepped on. ![]() The top surface of the tibia (the tibial plateau) is made of cancellous bone, which has a "honeycombed" appearance and is softer than the thicker bone lower in the tibia.įractures that involve the tibial plateau occur when a force drives the lower end of the thighbone (femur) into the soft bone of the tibial plateau, similar to a die punch. These types of fractures are called intra-articular or tibial plateau fractures. Sometimes these fractures extend into the knee joint and separate the surface of the bone into a few (or many) parts. The bone can break straight across (transverse fracture) or into many pieces (comminuted fracture)Įxamples of different types of proximal tibia fractures. There are several types of upper shinbone fractures. What are the different types of upper shinbone fractures? In addition, the way the ends of the bones are shaped help to keep the knee properly aligned. They also work as restraints - allowing some types of knee movements, and not others. Ligaments and tendons act like strong ropes to hold the bones together. Three bones meet to form the knee joint: the femur (thighbone), tibia (shinbone), and patella (kneecap). ![]() The knee is the largest weight-bearing joint of the body. In many cases, surgery is required to restore strength, motion, and stability to the leg, and reduce the risk for arthritis. Both the broken bone and any soft- tissue injuries must be treated together. In addition to the broken bone, soft tissues (skin, muscle, nerves, blood vessels, and ligaments) may be injured at the time of the fracture. The proximal tibia is the upper portion of the bone where it widens to help form the knee joint. (Right) Ligaments connect the femur to the tibia and fibula (kneecap not shown).Ī fracture, or break, in the shinbone just below the knee is called a proximal tibia fracture. (Left) The proximal tibia is the upper portion of the bone, closest to the knee. We offer diagnosis and treatment in over 70 specialties and subspecialties, as well as programs, services, and support to help you stay well throughout your lifetime. Physiotherapy can assist with either of these injuries as we can identify a problem, or refer for imaging when needed, but also we can assist with soft tissue release, pain and swelling control.BMC physicians are leaders in their fields with the most advanced medical technology at their fingertips and working alongside a highly skilled nursing and professional staff. The difficulty existing with bony bruises is, it becomes difficult to attribute whether the pain is a result of the bony bruise itself, or as a result of the concurrent injuries that occur, thus making it difficult to identify a prognosis or set healing times. Typically, bone bruises are seen in conjunction with other injuries such as ACL/PCL injuries, meniscal tears and collateral ligament tears. ![]() Bony bruises are typically diagnosed through MRI imaging and represent micro-fracturing on the inside of the bone. In a very similar way to which we get a bruise on our skin, a bone bruise results in areas of localised tenderness and bleeding after an injury with no evidence of fracturing on an x-ray. This results in something called a bone bruise or contusion. The difficulty exists when enough damage has been done, but not to the point where a fracture has occurred. Depending on the type of force (hitting from the front or the side) determines the type of tibial plateau fracture, as well as the prognosis.Ī skilled therapist is often able to recognise a tibial plateau fracture based on the presenting signs and symptoms of: knee pain, swelling, joint line tenderness, reduced range of motion, giving way, and pain with walking, however they are more often diagnosed through the use of x-ray imaging. pedestrian accidents, or in the elderly with low bone density. Tibial plateau fractures are usually the result of car vs. While much is known in the way tibial plateau fractures and how they are managed, little is known about bony contusions or “bone bruises” and their course of healing. ![]()
